$10 & Under

For just $8, you can grab this festive skin-care kit, which comes with an assortment of five different K-beauty sheet masks. In other words, it's like gifting your friend a nightly pampering session for a full work week.

TonyMoly My Shea Sheet Mask, $8, available at Ulta Beauty

You can make someone's long trip home for the holidays a lot easier by gifting them with a travel pack of skin essentials: makeup removing wipes, a gentle cleanser, a deep pore cleanser, and a mud mask.

formula 10.0.6 Clean Getaway Travel Kit, $9.99, available at Ulta Beauty

The perfect stocking stuffer, this Clinique kit comes with the renowned Moisture Surge Hydrator gel cream and a punchy pink lip gloss. It's a $30 value, priced at just $9.

Clinique Merry Moisture Set, $9.5, available at Ulta Beauty

As far as seasonal scents are concerned, everyone loves peppermint, which means you can't go wrong with this minty-fresh shower gel and body butter (pine-tree green loofah included).

The Body Shop Peppermint Candy Cane Body Care Trio, $10, available at Ulta Beauty

$25 & Under

If $30 is the agreed price limit for your next gift swap, this is the category where you'll find the perfect crunch-time present. One of our favorites is this Peter Thomas Roth masking sampler, which made our editors' gift lists and is basically the gift of a hungover Sunday-night pampering session every weekend for the foreseeable future.

Peter Thomas Roth Mask MashUp, $25, available at Ulta Beauty

Stila's Glitter & Glow eyeshadow is arguably the world's best liquid shadow if you're looking for a soft, shimmery lid that will stay put all night long (trust us, Beyoncé's makeup artist uses it). When you bring a three-pack of the most wearable shades (pale gold, silver, and copper bronze) to your white elephant swap, all your friends will be fighting for it, too.

Stila Shimmering Heights Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow Set, $25, available at Ulta Beauty

Looking for a bath set that screams "treat yourself"? Give this rich bubble bath and body lotion duo. The packaging is chic and the scent hits the nostalgic cord of baking fudge in your childhood kitchen... even if you never actually did that.

Philosophy Vanilla Velvet Truffle Set, $22, available at Ulta Beauty

One of the most useful gifts of the bunch, this set will have your BFF thinking of you every time she reaches for a refreshing rosewater spritz at her desk when 4 p.m. rolls around.

Mario Badescu Rosewater Facial Spray Trio, $24, available at Ulta Beauty

$50 & Under

When you up your budget to $50, you can't go wrong with a deluxe makeup brush set, an upgrade for the friend who's still using the brushes you got her four years ago.

Morphe Morphe X Jaclyn Hill The Eye Master Collection, $42, available at Ulta Beauty

There's something about uncapping a creamy, metallic eyeshadow stick that makes us excited to smudge it all over our lids. This pack comes with three blendable pencil shades — a deep shimmery bronze, soft copper, and a pale Champagne hue — that are so wearable, you'll want to keep the set for yourself.

NudeStix Eye Love Nudes 3 Piece Kit, $39, available at Ulta Beauty

This curated curly hair kit has all the DevaCurl favorites: the No Poo duo, a Melt Into Moisture treatment mask, a styling cream, and the Set It Free shine spray. The gift of nourishing hair products is one that truly keeps on giving.

DevaCurl Holiday Curly Care Kit, $48, available at Ulta Beauty

Instead of a DryBar gift card, you can do anyone — your friend, roommate, sister, or work wife — one better, with this Bumble and bumble Volume and Texture kit. The shampoo, conditioner, and texture spray will deliver the lift and plumpness of a salon blowout, without having to schedule an appointment during party season.

Bumble and bumble Bb. Volume + Texture Trio Holiday Set, $29, available at Ulta Beauty

Above $50

Yes, this Clarisonic is $199, but the techie device is just a one-time splurge — you only have to remember to replace the brush head for years to come.

Clarisonic Mia Smart 3-in-1 Connected Beauty Device, $199, available at Ulta Beauty

MAC's most popular lipstick shades — including Ruby Woo, Rebel, and Chili — can all be found in this 10-piece mini lipstick set.

MAC Shiny Pretty Things Lip Kit, $79.5, available at Ulta Beauty

If you're splurging on fragrance this holiday season, you can't go wrong with Gucci Bloom. Given the name and the packaging, you might be expecting a powdery floral, but it surprises you with an infusion of tuberose and jasmine, which gives it an unexpected musky undertone. With this set, you can keep the full-sized perfume and gift the rollerball, or the other way around...

Gucci Bloom Eau de Parfum Gift Set, $102, available at Ulta Beauty

The New Drugstore Lotions You Need To Get Your (Dry) Hands On

Dry skin season is officially upon us. And when those sandpaper-y patches make their presence known (and they will), you're going to need something to rub all over them — and the rest of your body from the neck down, while you're at it. Fortunately, one trip to the drugstore is all you really need.

Ahead, we've rounded up all the best new heavy-duty body lotions to hit the drugstore shelves this season. Grab them the next time you're wandering around Target — no Googling in the middle of the aisle required.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

If you're already a fan of Neutrogena's popular Hydro Boost formula, you'll love this whipped body butter. Lightweight, non-greasy, and fast-absorbing, it relieves itchy skin and ashy elbows without ruining your silk slip dress.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Whipped Body Balm, $5.99, available at Target

If you're dipping your fingers into a plastic jar of petroleum jelly so old that the 'Vaseline' label is peeling away at the edges, it's probably time to restock. Instead of reaching for the OG formula, try the brand's heavy-duty body lotion. Formulated with a combination of glycerin and pro-lipids, it helps replenish the skin's moisture barrier, providing instant relief to even your driest patches.

Vaseline Vaseline Clinical Care Extremely Dry Skin Rescue, $3.99, available at Target

Sometimes scooping out a thick balm is more satisfying than squeezing body lotion out of a tube. If you agree, you won't regret grabbing this heavy-duty jar from Aveeno. The special triple oat complex moisturizes dry skin by creating a protective layer to help reduce moisture loss. Pop a little on your feet before sliding into your new weather-resistant boots and you'll be armed against any heel cracking.

Aveeno Aveeno Cracked Skin Relief CICA Hand And Body Lotion, $2.99, available at Target

If you're looking for something easy to slather on before bed, this overnight treatment from Gold Bond is a solid nightstand staple. Massage a little into your dry areas, like your knees and ankles, curl up under your covers, and wake up to softer skin. It's like magic.

gold bond Gold Bond Overnight Hand And Body Lotions - 8oz, $7.99, available at Target

You probably didn't know your favorite shampoo brand also made body lotion. Well, surprise — OGX gives you touchably soft hair and hands.

OGX OGX Marula Oil Hand And Body Lotions - 19.5floz, $6.99, available at Target

Another hair-care brand that's doing some cool stuff in skin, SheaMoisture launched this indulgent lotion that leaves the soft, sweet smell of coconut anywhere it goes.

SheaMoisture Coconut Hand And Body Lotion, $9.99, available at Target

Can you think of anything more adult than matching your in-shower body wash with your post-shower lotion? With this two-pack, you get both best-selling picks from Love Beauty & Planet plus the refreshing aroma of mimosa flower and coconut water in every step of your body-care routine.

Love Beauty and Planet Love Beauty & Planet Bath And Body Gift Set Blue, $9.99, available at Target

Ask A Plant Queen: How Do I Keep My Plants Alive While On An Extended Vacation?

$

0

Welcome to Ask A Plant Queen , where with the help of Tula founder and bona fide plant expert Christan Summers, we'll answer every question you've ever had about the care, keeping, and presentation of houseplants. No need for you — or your pretty green pals — to thank us. Check out our first edition, which answers the question: "is watering plants with La Croix a thing? "

Question: My partner and I are about to embark on a two-week trip for the holidays. It's the longest we've ever been away from our apartment — and definitely the longest we've ever been away from our plant children. Since we live outside of the city, we're way too far for our friends to come up and water for us. So we're left worrying that a couple weeks without water or regulated temps in our apartment will leave our plant babies all wilt-y (and dead, eep!). How do we give our plants some TLC that will last the length of our vacay?”

Answer: How wonderful to take a long holiday! Good for you guys. Traveling in the winter is an ideal time for your plants as they are usually dormant, therefore not using as much energy and water. The sun is also not as strong so you can worry less about leaf burn and your home overheating. Before we get into tips, you need to take stock of your plants.

Anja Slibar

A Few Days Before You Leave

1. Divide your plants by size: Smaller plants need more attention and moisture than larger plants. If you have large, established plants all they may need is a good water and healthy indoor temperatures while you’re away.

2. Then, divide your plants by type and neediness: Succulents and cacti should be separated from tropical plants and other leafy, moisture-loving plants. Cacti and succulents shouldn’t require any extra moisture or care while you’re away.

3. From there, separate your tropical and leafy into two groups: The ones you water often and the ones you water less often should be two separate groups. For example, the ZZ (Zamioculcas zamifolia) is a tropical plant but can most definitely be left alone for two weeks – no care tricks required, except a good water before you leave. Same applies to Sansevieria and certain Philodendron and Dracaena plants.

4. Think about the temperature: Locate the sunniest and the draftiest area of your space.

Right Before You Leave

Now that you’ve completed the foundational work, we can move on to care tips. Please keep in mind that you know your home and plants better than I do; these are suggestions and should be applied after you’ve identified what your plants’ needs are and the environmental conditions of your home.

1. Optimize indoor temperatures: First priority is to make sure you leave your heat on. It shouldn't be the tropics, but the temperature should not fall below 55 degrees F. The best temp to leave the thermostat at is 65 degrees F. Indoor plants literally melt in freezing temps and some can develop leaf mold if left wet and cold. It won't matter what else you do if you're space is too cold.

Anja Slibar

2. Increase air flow: Do you have a ceiling fan? If so, leave it on at a lowest speed. This will help circulate stale air.

3. Dry your plants out to a healthy level of thirst: Then, a day or two before you leave, give everyone a good shower — water and mist. If you don’t usually water your succulents and cacti during winter, don’t start now. Keep to your usual routine.

4. Move all plants away from heat vents, drafty windows, and intense sun spots.

5. Group all of your moisture-loving leafy, tropical plants together: This will help retain moisture and warmth. For small, moisture-loving plants you could keep them in the tub or sink, sitting in a few inches of water. When they start to dry out, the soil will wick water into the roots from below.

6. Think about moisture: If you have sensitive plants that are susceptible to overwatering, do not sit them in water and instead fill a tray with pebbles, top it off with water, and sit your plant on top of the pebbles. This will help increase humidity without overwatering the roots.

7. Make a plant house: Another trick for small, moisture-loving plants is to build them a mini greenhouse. You’ll want to water them first so their soil is moist. Start with a large clear trash bag and cut it so it lies flat. Place bamboo sticks into the outer edge of your plants’ root balls so the plastic doesn’t rest on the foliage. Place your plants on top of the plastic and find the corners of the plastic. Gently pull the plastic over your plants, being careful not to tip them over. Blow air into the plastic until it balloons and the bag at the top. You’ve basically created a mini eco-system. Because your plants were watered, the evaporating moisture will catch at the top of the plastic and then "rain" back onto the plants. This is also a good trick for those who live in apartments where they don’t control the heat; the plastic will also help retain warmth.

Anja Slibar

8. Crank up the humidity: For tropical plants, increasing humidity is always a battle, especially when you’re away and not able to refill a humidifier. In addition to the pebble trick outlined above, you can fill a few pots with water and place them in super sunny spots in the apartment. The water will evaporate into the air, slightly increasing humidity.

There you have it! I hope this helps. And honestly, most plants can deal with you being away for two weeks as long as the temperature remains steady. Just make sure you identify any needy plants and give them the extra TLC outlined above.

I Spent 24 Hours In A Tiny Home & It Made Me Realize How High Maintenance I Am

13 Winter Hair-Color Ideas Straight Out Of L.A.’s Raddest Salons

$

Every winter, more and more fair-weather Manhattanites flee to the Pacific in search of sunshine. OK, so there are likely other factors fueling the coastal swap besides the weather — like the dream job offer that needs you to relocate ASAP or the urge to break out of the NYC grind (which suddenly feels extra brutal when you add a windchill) — but the gloriously comfortable, 65-degree December days are definitely a major draw.

Even if you're not making your way cross-country this winter, you can get an infusion of Cali cool with a new hair color. The quintessential L.A. girl — with her glossy, blonde curls peeking out from under the collar of her leather biker jacket — has no perception of seasonal depression. So, we look to her, and her colorist, for our cold-weather hair inspiration.

Ahead, we're breaking down the three biggest hair-color trends sweeping L.A. this season. Bring any of these to your next appointment, and you'll be feeling fresh, sunshiny vibes in no time — screw the five-day forecast.

Cool Beige

A blend between dusty blonde and warm brunette, cool beige balayage adds depth to any base color. Celebrity colorist Min Kim tells us that the shade is winter's most versatile and low-maintenance trend. "Pale beige blonde is the unicorn of winter hair color," says Kim. "The accent shade acts as a rich lowlight for natural blondes and gives a believable brightness to darker brunettes." And with the balayage blending technique, the root grow out is seamless — which means fewer Saturday mornings spent in a salon chair.

You can ask your colorist to focus your cool beige highlights at your ends for a dimensional color contrast between your tips and root color. Cassie Cohen, colorist at Sally Hershberger Salon tells us that this highlighting technique is especially rad because it appears effortless, and will help extend the time between color appointments.

Cool blonde highlights over a dark brunette root color creates a faded, sandy shade — which looks killer when the wind catches the ends.

Kim tells us that with the right at-home maintenance plan, the shade should be resistant to brassiness or a stripe-y look as it grows out. She recommends stocking the L'Oréal purple shampoo to keep the blonde bright and scheduling an in-salon gloss to amp up the shine between appointments.

If you have a base color that's black or very dark brown, the beige tone of the blonde highlight will give a dimmed, sun-kissed effect.

Rich Chocolate Brown

Nothing screams winter hair more than a glossy, chocolate brunette that evokes the warmth of stirring up a steamy mug of hot cocoa. Celebrity colorist Rita Hazan (the hands behind Beyoncé's buttery blonde highlights) tells us warm browns are all the rage this season. "I'm loving the blend of multi-tonal brown shades for winter," she says. "Depending on your base color, you can blend in a pale toffee highlight for a touch of brightness or a rich, caramel-colored accent for a gorgeous, dimensional brunette.

A brunette base with a touch of pale brown highlights through the ends gives the illusion of fuller, bouncier curls.

When you keep the toffee highlights focused at the ends — skimming the tip of your bangs and focused from mid-shaft down — it gives the most gorgeous frame to the face.

The key to keeping blended brunette color looking salon-perfect through the chilly months? Boost the shine. Hazan recommends using a gentle, color-safe shampoo and conditioner combo and adding a treatment mask once or twice a week to really get that glossy finish.

Honey Bronde

Consider a golden bronde infusion if you're craving sun-kissed brightness in the winter months. Cherin Choi, colorist at L.A.'s Nova Arts Salon, tells us that golden brunette tones — those that fall somewhere in between brown and blonde — give the illusion of a restful week on the beach without feeling overly summery.

Nova Arts Salon

Choi tells us that bronde balayage works on any base color, from light blonde to jet black.

Nova Arts Salon

Golden highlights over deep brown color evoke the perfect 4 p.m. winter sunset — a butterscotch sun fading into a crisp night sky.

If your current hair color feels a little mousy, a swirled honey highlight around the face will transform you into a vibrant strawberry bronde.

All Your Favorite Celebrities Are Going Green

$

Celebrity hair color trends, like seasons and tides, come and go. There once was a time when pink hair reigned supreme, then it was all about purple hues, then it was a take on blue denim, and finally, rainbow hair entered the beauty zeitgeist. Now it's shades of green that all the celebs are loving.

For the past few years, it's popped up rather randomly on celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Katy Perry, and Kelis, but now even more celebrities are taking their 'dos to bold new heights, wearing everything from lime to neon to kelly green with the help of a wig or dye job.

To Demi Crecco, a colorist at the Bumble and bumble uptown salon in New York City, this boom is no surprise. "I get people in here all the time asking for green hair," she says. "Why do they do it? I guess they're looking for something trendy. It's the same with the celebrities, they want something new."

The process for dyeing your green hair can be intense. Before you even think about trying the hue, Crecco must bleach the hair out to ensure the color will pop. (Unless you're naturally very light, in which case you might not need bleach, depending on the shade you want.) "You can't just throw green onto dark hair," Crecco says. "You have to think of how the color will mix. If you have yellow hair and throw green on it, then you can get something super muddy, and it probably won't be what you're looking for at all."

If you're going from brunette to green, according to Crecco, the process could easily take five or more hours. Then, after you go green, Crecco says it's essential to take care of that color, recommending Bumble and bumble's Color Minded shampoo. Then before blowdrying, Crecco likes to use Bumble and bumble's oil-based Save The Day Day Protective Repair Fluid to make sure the hair isn't further damaged.

Clearly a ton of thought has to be put into dyeing your hair a Technicolor shade, but the vibrant end results really may be worth it. Also, always remember that if this kind of color commitment seems far too extreme, there are always wigs, which is what plenty of celebrities are opting to use to flaunt some green locks, ahead.

Jonah Hill, a rare male hair chameleon, went from bright pink to platinum in 2018. And while out holiday shopping in New York City, Hill debuted another rainbow hue just before the new year: green hair peeking out from under a matching green beanie.

Photo: TheImageDirect.com.

A week after Cardi B dyed her hair blue to match her Lamborghini, Kim Kardashian West kinda did the same thing, dyeing her hair, and then getting a Lamborghini in Miami to match.

Hairstylist Chris Appleton helped organize this flex, outfitting Kim in a super-long neon green wig, which did match that Lambo quite perfectly. Kim's daughter North West was also a fan, riding around on a scooter in her mom's wig the morning after.

Following very closely in Kim's footsteps, SZA popped up in a more vibrant neon green wig, courtesy of hairstylist Dionte Gray, right after the VMAs. Gray was such a fan of the look that he dyed his own hair the same color right after, too.

Instagram

Nicki Minaj gave us a sneak peek at her spin on green hair, showing off slime green strands, à la SZA, on Instagram.

Instagram

One of the easiest ways test out different hair colors without the commitment is with a protective hairstyle. Leigh-Anne Pinnock of Little Mix took a stab at the green hair trend by braiding her hair with grass-colored extensions.

For her 23rd birthday, Dua Lipa went full throttle into this green hair movement with a deep, emerald green wig. She paired it with a pink sequin leotard, which made for one good color story.

Instagram

Monica, who's on a bit of a hair color journey after going blue and yellow, decided to give bright green a chance thanks to hairstylist Kellon Deryck.

Instagram

For a far more subtle take on this trend, musician Kitty Cash frosted her bleached hair with a pastel green hue.

Every shade of green hair — from forest to neon to the deepest of mermaid turquoise — can be seen from NYC to LA and beyond. As Kylie Jenner proved with her green ends, weaving a super bright emerald color through an ombré is a great way to embrace the green hair trend with a bang.

Willow Smith rocked an incredible kelly-green buzzcut, proving the color looks magical on all lengths.

Rocking mossy green hair and dark roots, Katy Perry helps us remember why green hair really is so awesome.

Photo: FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP/Getty Images.

Kate Bosworth surprised us all when she added mint green to her ends. Mint is not a long-lasting shade; it starts bright and fades as fast as you can say California blonde. But, if you hate it, it can be hair today, gone tomorrow.

Like a rarely seen tropical rainforest bird, Chloe Norgaard strutted the Rodarte runway with impeccable lime-green tresses. Neon green is one of those colors that works on any skin tone — the point is to be bold.

Forget her milkshake: Kelis' green hair brought everybody to the yard. This renowned style chameleon looks fabulous no matter what she does. Her fearless experimentation with her hair has inspired many women to embrace their natural texture and embark on colorful journeys of their own. And Kelis' blue to green gradient hair color just might be her best yet. Damn right, it's better than yours.

12 NYE Hairstyles That'll Still Look Good When The Clock Strikes Midnight

There are two ways to ring in a new year: You could be in bed, wearing pajamas and indulging in a box of Domino's pizza. Or, you could pull out your best sequin dress and dance in the new year with a bottle of champagne in one hand (and a noise popper in the other), glitter on our lids and lips, and confetti in your hair.

There's nothing wrong with whichever way you choose to welcome 2019, but if you're leaning towards the latter scenario, hair is a crucial part of the New Year's Eve plan. After all, dancing, drinking, and celebrating needs a style that is durable, cute, and won't make you want to untag yourself in Instagram photos.

So as soon as you finish browsing through PrettyLittleThing or Zara for the perfect outfit, take a break and plan out your beauty look, starting with the hair inspo we rounded up ahead.

If you have velvet ribbon lying around, then you have what you need to replicate this look Chad Wood did on Vanessa Hudgens. The sleek accessory will instantly make any regular-shmegular bun look red carpet-worthy.

Whether your hair is naturally curly or relaxed, you can pull off these sexy finger waves that Tish Celestine did on Danielle Brooks.

Add two shimmery pins to the side of your messy chignon to give your hair some festive flair.

This sleek booty-length ponytail that Lacy Redway did on Amandla Stenberg is so good — you'll want to keep it in and wear it to work on January 2nd.

Switching up your look doesn't have to be costly, either. Grab a packet of Kenekalon braiding hair from the beauty supply store and add a super long braid — like Issa Rae's — to your natural hair.

So sparkles and shimmer aren't your thing? We get it. Opt for Old Hollywood-inspired waves à la Margot Robbie, which you can wear to NYE parties and beyond.

One of the easiest ways to transform your look — without have to fiddle too much with your natural hair — is a frohawk. Just pin the sides of your curls up to meet the center of your hair, throw on a bold lip, and you're good to go.

Celebrity stylist Justine Marjan used her new line of Kitsch hair accessories to turn Khloé Kardashian's regular topknot into a party updo.

Is it just us or did Tym Wallace strategically place these bobby pins on Angela Rye's ponytail to look like fireworks?

All you need is metallic gold braiding cord to replicate this simple, popping ponytail by celebrity stylist Matthew Collins.

Getting your hair to cooperate and form a chunky pull-out braid is half the battle of copying this look by L'Oréal Professional Hairstylist Jennifer MacDougal. The rest is as easy as tying a silky black ribbon into a bow.

NYE is the perfect excuse to copy this twisted updo (which we're still obsessed with, obvi) that Felicia Leatherwood did on Ryan Michelle Bathe at the 2018 Emmy Awards.

I Negotiated & Became The Highest-Paid Manager At My Company

In our series Salary Stories , women with long-term career experience open up about the most intimate details of their jobs: compensation. It’s an honest look at how real people navigate the complicated world of negotiating, raises, promotions, and job loss, with the hope it will give young women more insight into how to advocate for themselves — and maybe take a few risks along the way.

Additionally, we are joining forces with SoFi for the next few months to bring you career tips and coaching. We got the low-down from SoFi's career coaches who recommend:

It can be scary to ask for a higher salary after you get a job offer. Just remember: They want you! Another way to look at it: How much are you willing to pay to avoid an awkward conversation?

Been in the workforce for at least eight years and interested in contributing your salary story? Submit your information here.

Previously, we talked to a 30-year-old engineering analyst who got an $11,000 raise after telling her manager she got another job offer, a 33-year-old senior marketing specialist who regrets not having negotiated early in her career, and a 29-year old regional manager in the wine and spirits industry who tripled her salary without changing companies.

Age: 34
Current Location: Orlando, FL
Current Industry & Title: Marketing Communications, Manager
Starting Salary: $30,000 in 2007
Current Salary: $72,000
Number Of Years Employed: 11
Biggest Salary Jump: $20,000 in 2013
Biggest Salary Drop: $16,800 in 2009 (unemployed)

Biggest Salary Negotiation Regret: "Not knowing that I could negotiate. I'm the first in my family and extended family to go to college, so I didn’t learn how to negotiate or move up the ladder. When I graduated college and was offered a job, I had never gotten paid more than $8 an hour, so I took the position on the spot — no questions asked. Looking back, they must have known I was a college graduate and figured they could pay me a bit less, so I could have asked for more. I just didn’t know how to."

Best Salary-Related Advice: "Know your worth and be ready to articulate to an employer what you will bring to the table. Recently, my cousin was going after a job and didn’t think the pay was sufficient, so I told her to negotiate. She went back and told them she needed more money for bills and expenses. I told her that, instead, she should go in and make a case for her value and all that she would bring to the company. There are a lot of people who, like my cousin, don’t know to focus on conveying how they are going to help the company's bottom line. So my biggest advice is to advocate for your worth and make it clear what your value is to the company, instead of telling them why you might need more money."

"I graduated from college on a Friday and had full-time job working as a reporter by Monday.

"While I was still in college, a few news outlets came to our campus looking for interns. I signed up to meet with a local Spanish-language newspaper because I was fluent in Spanish and felt I had a leg up. I interned a couple of days each week to help edit for $10 an hour.

"Eventually, there was an opening for a full-time reporter position and since they liked my writing, and I had done well on my initial edit test, they ended up choosing me. In hindsight, there were probably more experienced reporters applying but they most likely demanded higher salaries, and I did not negotiate at all.

"Back then, I had no idea how much people usually made out of college, so $30,000 seemed like a lot of money to me, especially since I had no experience. Also, the health insurance benefits were the best I'd ever had, so I took the job."

"After getting the reporter job, I planned to stay for about two years to gain experience so that I could apply for a job at a bigger paper. But then, the newspaper unexpectedly closed.

"The industry was changing rapidly and most papers were looking for multimedia reporters, but I didn’t have that kind of experience.

"I filed for unemployment and received about $250 a week in benefits. At the time, I also broke up with my boyfriend of five years, and so I started looking at other career options."

"I needed a job, and I couldn't seem to land one in my field. Then, I saw there was an airline in need of bilingual crew members so I applied and was hired.

"Flight attendant pay is confusing. You start out as reserve, or on call, which means covering flights whenever another, usually more senior, flight attendant calls out or drops a trip. Initially, I made very little money and was only guaranteed 70 hours a month at $20 an hour plus five hours of overtime at $30 an hour each month.

"As a flight attendant, you don’t get paid for all of the hours you work. For instance, you aren't paid for your time during takeoff and landing, and you're not paid if your flight is delayed. You’re only paid for actual flight time.

"While some people love working as a flight attendant, I didn’t. Reserve flights were usually the worst flights that senior flight attendants didn’t want. I hated having to stay at a crash pad in New York and share a room with a dozen other people. I never knew when I could be at home with my family, I had to work weekends and holidays, and I wasn’t getting paid enough."

"I didn't love being away from home for low pay, and I didn’t want to fly anymore. I was ready to do something else. So after about a year and half, I applied to be an instructor on special assignment. In this new job, I was making $20 an hour, and the hours were much better, plus I was guaranteed 120 hours a month.

"I was already used to flight attendant pay being weird and was okay with it. This position brought my salary up to about $36,000 a year, and it was much higher than I was making before so I was ecstatic."

"Every year on your anniversary, the airline gives employees an automatic raise. I got a pay raise of roughly $3 an hour, so I was making $23 an hour.

"Though it can be difficult, there are people who love this job. While your duties don’t change, you automatically get raises every year and more seniority for doing the same job without any added responsibilities.

"Even though I liked being an instructor I realized that wasn’t what I wanted to be doing. I still wanted to be in communications and started thinking about pursuing another career. "

"I got married and went back to flying with my husband who was also a flight attendant at the time. I had more seniority and better pay this time around, but I still really hated being away from home, so I didn't fly as often as I could have.

"I was also enrolled in an online Master’s program studying New Media Journalism. I still thought I wanted to pursue journalism and was trying to gain the multimedia skills I was lacking."

"During this time, a local magazine was looking for freelance writers, so I sent them some samples, and they hired me on.

"I began to freelance write for them and made anywhere from $20 to $40 an article, roughly $4,000 a year, on top of my flight-attendant income."

"I obtained my graduate degree and thought I was going to be done with the airline. I planned on writing more so I asked for and was granted a leave.

"I was looking for other work, including as a substitute teacher and a reporter. Then a special assignment opened up in my airline’s communication department in New York City, so I applied. I interviewed for the job even though I still really wanted to be a journalist.

"I was already known in corporate because of my role as an instructor. And, because I had a background in communications and new media journalism, they ended up offering me the position.

"At the same time, I also got an offer for a local substitute teaching job and an offer for a reporter position with a small newspaper in North Carolina. My husband told me that if I pursued journalism full time that it could be great, but that it could also pigeonhole me in that industry. He said that if I took the communications coordinator job in New York I would expand my résumé and grow more as a professional, so I ended up taking communications job.

"The pay structure for this job was the same as my last special assignment, for 120 hours a month, but my hourly rate increased. Additionally, since the position was in New York, I also received an additional $1,000 monthly housing stipend. This brought my total compensation up to $52,000 a year.

"I loved this job. I had never done corporate communications before, but it was similar to journalism in a way because I was still writing. I wrote internal communications for staff and articles for the in-flight magazine. In school I had learned how to shoot and edit video, so I would sometimes help out on video projects as well. I was really excited to be putting all my new skills to good use."

"After seven months working on the special assignment, a permanent position became available. I applied and was offered the job at $60,000.

"By taking this full-time corporate position, I would lose my flight attendant qualification, which meant I wouldn't be able to go back to flying like I did before. I would also lose all of my flying perks.

"Because of the benefits I would be losing, I was in a strong position to negotiate my pay. To negotiate, I used the fact that I had to relocate to New York from Florida permanently, leaving my community behind. I also used the fact that I'd be bringing all of the skills I had gained as the communications coordinator and all of company knowledge I'd gained in my five years as a flight attendant to this job.

"After a long discussion, they came back with an offer of $68,000 a year, which was at the top of the pay scale for that position at the time. I accepted, and they also paid all of my relocation fees, which included covering my broker's fee and all my moving expenses."

"While I was in a senior position, most of the managers around me had been there for twenty-plus years, and I didn’t see much room to grow. So I started applying to different jobs.

"At the time, my friend’s husband was battling cancer back in central Florida, and I realized I didn’t want to be so far away from my friends and family.

"I saw a position on LinkedIn and did a preliminary phone interview with HR. The company had a New York office so I was able to do three in-person interviews and eventually did additional phone interviews with senior leadership as well as an online test.

"They wanted to offer me the job, and we debated back and forth about the salary. They never gave me an exact number, but I told them that I wouldn’t take less than $70,000. They told told me that this was too high because the cost of living in Florida was lower than it is in New York. I countered, explaining that I would be going from a senior analyst to a managerial position with more responsibility which, in turn, required more pay. Since I was already making $68,000, I told them I couldn't go lower than $70,000.

"I was comfortable at my last job, and I was getting paid well, so I wasn’t desperate for this new job. I knew they were kind of desperate and really needed a bilingual person to fill this position, so I knew I was in a good place to negotiate. They eventually offered me the position at $70,000, and I became the highest-paid manager at this level at my company.

"Upon acceptance, I also asked them to cover my moving expenses, which at that point was pretty gutsy. But I figured I had nothing to lose, and they ended up giving me $2,000.

"Even though, on paper, my salary stayed almost the same, I considered it a significant increase since I went from living in New York to Florida, where the cost of living is much lower. Still, I wouldn't have gotten the pay increase I did had I not insisted on not going lower than what I was already making."

"Every year my company awards 1% raises across the board. I didn’t try to negotiate because they said they had been struggling, and it was hard to find money in the budget. They reminded me how much I was making, and maybe I was doing myself a disservice, but I knew I was making more than everyone else so it was hard to ask for more."

"I was awarded another annual 1% raise. Again, I didn’t negotiate."

"I was awarded another 1% raise this year, bringing me up to $72,121. Salary increases have been really tough and slow at this company. And, since I'm one of the highest paid managers in my department, it's been hard to make an argument for a significant increase.

"I am now in the middle of interviewing at other jobs and plan to continue negotiating very hard for my next position. Companies have been pretty insistent when asking about how much I'm currently making, and I’ve found ways to be strategic, such as providing a range and not a hard number. This way, you give an answer but you don’t pigeonhole yourself. I know that I won’t consider my next role for less than $85,000.

"I've learned to keep in mind that I am worth more now than when I started at the job initially. I started in my current job at $70,000, but since then, I've gained four years of additional experience and have proved to be successful at media relations. My work has won awards, I have completed a graduate certificate, and I have become involved in community leadership in public relations.

"I consider my skills more valuable than four years ago, and therefore, look to be compensated appropriately. I think that sometimes, people look at their current salary and forget that they may be worth more now than when they accepted that salary."

This Month's Full Moon Couldn't Be Better Timed

Ready for a stellar weekend, stargazers? This Saturday, one day after the winter solstice (the first official day of winter), the moon will wax to fullness in the lively sign of Gemini before heading into homebody Cancer for the rest of its full phase. In other words, this weekend will encourage you to turn up then turn way down.

Traditionally known as the Cold Moon or the Long Nights Moon, December's full moon is spiritually associated with rest, care, and self-evaluation. It's meant to help you process the past 12 months, while preparing you for the new year to come. Not only is it good timing that this lunar phase arrives toward the end of the month, when 2019 is already on the brain, but its hosting Zodiac signs lend themselves perfectly to its energy, too.

To begin, the Gemini full moon will promote mental clarity and encourage you to speak your mind. So, first thing on Saturday, you may find the energy to wrap up old correspondences before the holidays. And you could feel compelled to reach out to your friends to tell them what they meant to you this year — or to just reminisce about 2018's wildest moments.

Gemini is also the sign of the Twins, and therefore rules all matters of duality. This sign's realm of influence lends itself nicely to a lunar phase that's associated with both looking back and looking forward. Let yourself explore both the past and the days ahead. And, in true Gemini form, be playful with your reflections — celebrate your wins, find future solutions in your losses, and dream big for 2019.

Then, once the moon slides into Cancer (which is set to happen around midday on Saturday), you can focus on the "rest and care" parts of this full moon. This water sign is the sensitive caretaker of the Zodiac — and when it hosts the full moon, it prioritizes this lunar phase's theme of culmination and conclusion.

Where some signs imbue full moon periods with a celebratory energy, Cancer's idea of a celebration is cozy self-care, preferably in the privacy of your own home. And really, is there anything you'd rather do on December 22 besides watch your favorite show for the umpteenth time and then go to bed early? If you've been looking for a reason to stay in (or just have low-key night in with a few friends) let it be the Cancerian Long Nights Moon. You've got all of 2019 to go, go, go.

Rachel McAdams Wore A Breast Pump For A Magazine Cover Shoot

Rachel McAdams wore a breast pump on the cover of Girls. Girls. Girls. Magazine like it was a totally normal part of her designer look — because that’s exactly what breastfeeding is for many mothers like McAdams.

On Instagram, Claire Rothstein, the founder of Girls. Girls. Girls. Magazine, explained how the concept of the shoot came to fruition, and why it was so important for her to change people’s perceptions of breastfeeding. The shoot took place six months after McAdams gave birth to her son, "so between shots she was expressing/pumping as still breastfeeding," Rothstein wrote. They collectively decided they should try shooting her with the breast pump on.

"Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world, like breathing, and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of," Rothstein wrote on Instagram. "I don’t even think it needs explaining, but just wanted to put this out there, as if it even changes one person’s perception of something so natural, so normal, so amazing then that’s great."

@ClaireRothstein magazine founder here 👋🏼 just sharing this image from my account which I think encapsulates @girls.girls.girls.magazine and what we stand for...👠 “A million reasons why I wanted to post this picture. Obviously #rachelmcadams looks incredible and was quite literally the dream to work with but also this shoot was about 6 months post her giving birth to her son, so between shots she was expressing/pumping as still breastfeeding. We had a mutual appreciation disagreement about who’s idea it was to take this picture but I’m still sure it was hers which makes me love her even more. Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world, like breathing and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of. I don’t even think it needs explaining but just wanted to put this out there, as if it even changes one person’s perception of something so natural, so normal, so amazing then that’s great. Besides she’s wearing Versace and @bulgariofficial diamonds and is just fucking major. Big shout out to all the girls 💪🏽 #rachelmcadams for @girls.girls.girls.magazine cover shoot 📸 @clairerothstein #pleaseshare Side note: I did not look anywhere near as fabulous as this when feeding/pumping. And that’s ok too” Stylist: @alicialombardini 👠 . #girlsgirlsgirlsmag #girlsgirlsgirls #bringingbackthewoman #nogrungejustglamour #independentmagazine #printisnotdead #normalisebreastfeeding #normalizebreastfeeding #breastfeeding #life #women #versace #bulgari

McAdams has been pretty private about her newborn son, but this very public display of motherhood didn't go unnoticed. When the photo was released on social media, people called McAdams a "true queen," and others said the pumping photo "warmed my heart. " Some even said they had plans to frame the photo.

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, McAdams described motherhood as the "greatest thing that's ever happened" to her. "[People say] your life is not your own anymore, but I had 39 years of me, I was sick of me," she told the Sunday Times. "I was so happy to put the focus on some other person."

The bottom line that this badass photo proves is that breastfeeding is part of life — part of the reason breasts exist are to feed babies, yet the act is still so stigmatized. Not to mention, breastfeeding can be a very difficult and frustrating process for lots of people, so it deserves to be applauded, not shamed.

While this glamorous photoshoot was intended to celebrate breastfeeding in a very high-brow way, Rothstein acknowledged that breastfeeding is not always so high-brow. "I did not look anywhere near as fabulous as this when feeding/pumping," she wrote. "And that’s ok too."

Amid Lawsuits, Experts Caution More Research Into IUDs Causing Neurological Disorder

$

0

Hundreds of people — at present, 856 and counting — have filed lawsuits against German drug company Bayer over the last two years, claiming that the popular IUD Mirena is causing severe neurological side effects, Rewire reports. Experts who have been following the case, however, say that more research is needed before a connection can be made between the contraceptive and the disorder.

Mirena is a tiny piece of T-shaped plastic that is inserted directly into the uterus as a way to prevent pregnancy. The FDA approved the sale of Mirena in the United States in 2000, and it is now considered one of the most popular IUDs in the country; 2 million women use it worldwide.

Side effects of the device are not unlike the side effects found with any contraceptive: weight gain, nausea, cramping, or abdominal and pelvic pain, to name a few. IUD-specific side effects such as expulsion or perforation are common and listed directly on the product label.

That is important to note because the complaint lodged in this most recent set of lawsuits pertains to something that is not listed on the label: a neurological disorder that falsely resembles a tumor. The disorder is known as pseudotumor cerebri, or idiopathic intracranial hypertension — a fancy way to say increased pressure on the brain. The Mayo Clinic lists symptoms of the condition as including headaches, worsening vision, tinnitus, ringing in the ears, and nausea. At present, the cause of the disorder is unknown, though factors like obesity, some medications, and various health problems are among the risk factors.

In a statement to Refinery29, Bayer asserted that they are continuing to work with the FDA. The legal case is ongoing.

“Bayer takes all adverse events seriously, continually collects and analyzes the data we receive. We work closely with the FDA to monitor Mirena’s safety profile, and based on the totality of data available to date, a positive benefit-risk profile consistent with approved labeling continues to be observed with Mirena. To date, no study, physician, or regulatory agency has concluded that Mirena can cause idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Judge Engelmeyer, in a recent decision excluded all the expert witnesses presented by plaintiffs, stating that ‘[o]utside of this litigation, there is a complete absence of scholarship opining that Mirena, or for that matter any LNG-based contraceptive, is a cause of IIH.’ In light of this decision, the Court has invited motions for summary judgment from Bayer."

Mirena is known as the IUD with the most complaints to the FDA; of the 95,008 reports about the drug filed to the FDA’s Adverse Events Reporting System, or FAERS, 697 pertain to intracranial hypertension. But despite the data in the FAERS database, FDA spokesperson Deborah Kotz told Rewire News no conclusions can be drawn about Mirena’s link to the disorder just yet.

“Existence of a report does not establish causation,” she said. “For any given report, there is no certainty that a suspected drug caused the reaction.”

This story was originally published on December 8, 2018. It has been updated with additional reporting.

Correction: The original article stated that 856 women have pending legal action against Bayer; this information has been updated to reflect that some lawsuits may have been filed by male spouses of women who are plaintiffs.

21 Celebrity Tattoos That Made Headlines In 2018

$

A lot of seriously strange, exciting, and heartbreaking moments happened in 2018: Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber eloped; there were two royal weddings (both featured messy buns); and we found out Bradley Cooper can sing suspiciously well. But still, none of that tops the constant barrage of shocking celebrity tattoos we had to endure this year. You know what they say: Every time a bell rings, an angel gets it wings a celebrity gets a new tattoo.

Stars like Ariana Grande, Brooklyn Beckham, even Ben-friggin-Affleck showed off new tattoos this year. Some were big, some were small, some had meaning, some were for fun, and some are already gone. If you weren't scrolling through Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat constantly (like us), you probably missed some of the famous tattoos that made headlines.

So, keep clicking to relive all the memorable celebrity ink that was revealed in 2018.

The tattoo: Emma Watson's "Times Up"

A bright light in the snoozefest that was the Academy Awards was Emma Watson's Time's Up-inspired tattoo. But this ink wasn't controversial because of what it said, but for how it was spelled. Missing the apostrophe in the iconic movement's title, Watson's temporary tattoo was attacked on Twitter within seconds of fans spotting it on the post-Oscars red carpet. By morning, the drama was diffused thanks to a funny tweet from Watson. "Fake tattoo proofreading position available. Experience with apostrophes a must," she wrote.

The tattoo: Ben Affleck's phoenix

Affleck has had a year. Fittingly, Affleck got a tattoo of a phoenix that extends from his shoulder blades to his left butt cheek. Why? The fictional bird is known in mythology to have burned itself alive only to rise from its own ashes — reborn to live another life. Affleck has most likely been adding to this tattoo for years (although, he once claimed it was fake), but it wasn't until March that he revealed the ink in its entirety. BFF Matt Damon calls it "artistic expression," but the jury is still out on that one.

The tattoo: ScarJo's back tattoo

The only back tattoo bigger and more mysterious than Affleck's is Scarlett Johansson's. Technically, the first time we caught a glimpse of the piece was in August 2017, but it wasn't fully seen until this year's Emmy Awards. Thanks to her low-back gown and shoulder-grazing bob, we got a direct view of the top half of the detailed tattoo that features several roses and a woodland creature (perhaps a lamb). Hopefully in 2019, we'll see the whole thing.

The tattoo: Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott's butterflies

Remember when Jenner hid her pregnancy for nine whole months? She announced the birth via an intimate home video on YouTube, and she revealed that Stormi was, in fact, Scott's daughter (see: the bodyguard rumor) with matching tattoos. Just days after the news broke, the new parents showed off tiny butterflies etched onto their ankles in honor of their daughter.

The tattoo: Ariana Grande's Spirited Away

If you didn't already know that Grande loves anime, then her Spirited Away arm tattoo will make you a believer. In August, just a couple months after the 25-year-old singer got engaged to comedian Pete Davidson, she paid a visit to her go-to artist Mira Mariah (@girlknewyork) to get a massive tattoo of Chihiro, the protagonist in the film. To this day, it's her biggest yet (even counting that new huge hand tat).

The tattoo: Grande's Mac Miller tribute

In December, Grande blessed fans with the release of her much-anticipated music video for "Thank U, Next." A few days later, she posted behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot on YouTube, and fans were able to spot a new tattoo, "Myron," inked on her left foot. Arianators quickly recognized it as the name of Miller's dog, who Grande reportedly adopted not long after the rapper's death. Not only was this tat a sweet tribute, but it's also a clever way to cover up the previous foot tattoo she got in honor of Davidson's late father.

The tattoo: Grande's worker bee

Long before Grande's whirlwind year really hit full speed, the singer got the now-famous worker bee tattoo in honor of the Manchester terror attack that happened after one of her concerts in May 2017. Although fans speculated for nearly a year about whether or not Grande had the ink, it wasn't until the attack's one-year anniversary that she revealed it.

The tattoo: Drake's owl

Some might call this a thirst trap, but we call it an impressive tattoo reveal. We've had glimpses of the owl before, but lucky for us, Drake decided to show off the whole thing — which reportedly took 12 hours to complete — in a shirtless mirror photo on Instagram. Thanks, Drake!

The tattoo: Pete Davidson's bunny ears

Long before Davidson met, dated, and broke up with Ariana Grande, the comedian loved tattoos. In fact, he loved them so much, he has almost two sleeves and a chest full of 'em. Still, no one seemingly cared about Davidson's frequent trips to the tattoo artist until he was engaged to the pop singer and decided to get this tribute to his now-ex behind his ear. Fans quickly noticed that the tattoo was a play on Grande's Dangerous Woman album cover, although, it did not last long.

The tattoo: Halsey's Lil Wayne quote

And the award for most spontaneous tattoo of the year goes to... Halsey! Just moments before joining Lil Wayne on the SNL stage for his performance of "Can't Be Broken," the singer requested JonBoy ink her upper arm. The tattoo turned out to be a scale, anchored by lyrics from Wayne's 2011 song "She Will." While some thought the new tattoo was a stab at ex-boyfriend G-Eazy, others thought it was a sweet tribute to both Wayne and Halsey's shared zodiac signs.

The tattoo: Halsey's Beck tribute

Turns out Halsey really loves getting other musician's lyrics inked on her body. Months prior to her Lil Wayne feature, the singer got her neck tatted with, "I'm a loser, baby," from the 1994 song "Loser" by Beck.

The tattoo: Maisie Williams' Game of Thrones tribute

2019 is the year we say goodbye to GoT, and in honor of wrapping the final season of the popular HBO show, most of the actors got personal tributes to their time on the series. Williams paid a visit to Mr. K at New York's Bang Bang studio for a tattoo honoring her on-screen persona, Arya Stark. The simple script on the back of her neck reads "no one." Although, her homage to the franchise isn't quite as spoiling to the finale as her costar's...

The tattoo: Sophie Turner's Stark spoiler

Turner (who plays Sansa Stark in GoT) was the first of the ensemble to get a tattoo inspired by the show — and it could also be a major spoiler. Written underneath an image of the House Stark symbol, a direwolf, is a telling maxim heard frequently on the show: "The pack survives." Could this be a clue as to whether or not Arya, Sansa, Bran, and Jon Snow make it through GoT 's eighth and final season? Guess we'll have to wait until April to see.

The tattoo: Joe Jonas' Sansa Stark

Speaking of Sansa, Turner's fiancé — a Jonas brother! — got a tattoo in March that looked oddly familiar to some fans. Although no one knows whether or not Jonas' arm tattoo was made in the image of Turner's GoT character, we do know the ink — created by Canadian artist Curt Montgomery — is really damn good.

The tattoo: Emilia Clarke's dragon babies

The last memorable GoT tattoo to come out of 2018 is from none other than the Khalessi and prospective ruler of Westeros, Daenerys Targaryen. Clarke, who plays Targaryen on the show, commemorated her time as the Mother of Dragons with three flying dragons inked on her wrist.

The tattoo: Justin Bieber's entire chest

We can't keep up with Bieber's tattoo collection any longer — there are just too many to keep count. It was April of this year that the singer wrote a post on Instagram about the 100 hours (!) of work on his body. His most recent? A yet-to-be-revealed matching tattoo with wife Hailey.

The tattoo: Lucy Hale's sister tattoo

This year, the ultimate sibling tattoo inspiration came to Instagram by way of Hale and her sister. In July, both women got "I love you" in their late grandmother's handwriting inked on the outside of their wrists.

The tattoo: Dua Lipa's tour count

After 245 shows, Lipa and her crew got matching ink to commemorate the end of a very long tour run. Not only was it a cool addition to Lipa's existing collection of minimal art, but it's also in one of the trendiest spots of the year: the upper arm.

The tattoo: Selena Gomez's BFF tribute

After briefly returning to Instagram, Gomez and four of her best friends hit up a tattoo spot for matching ink: the number "4." While Gomez chose to get hers on her ditch, the crease of the arm, the rest of her pals got their tattoos on their ankles. But that wasn't the only tattoo Gomez got that day. Just moments later, the singer showed off the number "1" above her right ribs, a tribute to her bestie Courtney Barry.

The tattoo: Post Malone's under-eye bags

Yep, instead of a dermatologist-approved eye cream, the 23-year-old rapper chose to ink "Always" and "Tired" on his dark circles. We guess that's one way to distract people from the visible effects of insomnia.

The tattoo: Brooklyn Beckham's "Mom"

Most of Beckham's tattoos are tributes to his siblings — sometimes his dad, too. Finally, in February, the budding photographer got some ink all about his mom. It literally just says "Mom" inside a heart on his shoulder. Classic.

If you've been holding out on your holiday shopping for some wildly perfect gift guide to show up just in time, you're playing a scary game of roulette. Or, at least you were — until now. That's right: We've made the last-minute gift guide to trump all last-minute gift guides.

Boasting everything from a super-silky pajama set (for those at-home spa days, you know) to a dad hat adorned with the New York Times logo, these 15 finds fit the bill for anyone on your list: your little sister, your best friend, yourself (hey, 2018 has been a long year, you deserve a little something too!). Consider these the little things that make a big impact; things that you might not have considered originally, but are actually quite practical.

Last-minute or not, this is pretty much our entire holiday wish need list. And if you haven't caught the hint, we're basically asking you to buy two of each — one for you and, well, one for us.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Give the gift of sharp sight, or at least an escape from a really sunny day, with a gift card from Warby Parker. And as an added benefit, if you order now, you'll also receive one of these super cute gift boxes designed by Chilean artist, Camilo Huinca.

Warby Parker Gift Card, $50, available at Warby ParkerPhoto Courtesy of Warby Parker.

There's no gift easier and more generally appreciated than a candle that's both Instagram-worthy and smells great. Even better? If you order by noon (ET) on December 18th, Nordstrom will deliver this candle right to your giftee's door for free.

Boy Smells Cedar Stack Scented Candle, $32, available at NordstromPhoto Courtesy of Nordstrom.

This addictive, vanilla-based scent with notes of caramel makes for a perfect gift that they're guaranteed to swoon over. Not to mention, the luxe pink-and-gold bottle will instantly upgrade any vanity.

Prada Candy EDP, $122, available at Macy's

Not sure what he/she wants this year? Play it safe with a pair of earrings we've been seeing everywhere over the last few months. And even if you wait all the way until December 21st to do your holiday shopping, your gift will still arrive just in time for Christmas Eve.

If you're looking to get a gift super last minute, where better to look than Amazon Prime, a.k.a. our go-to for all things quick delivery. In this case, two-step order Bill Cunningham's new memoir for your brother who's looking to study fashion and photography.

Penguin Books Fashion Climbing: A Memoir with Photographs, $16.38, available at Amazon

After one too many glasses of champagne, late nights at the office or holiday soirees, no one is safe from the inevitable skin fatigue that comes around this time of year. Give the gift of an at-home facial with this 5.0 out of 5.0 rated Tata Harper mask from Saks. But quick, if you order by noon on December 20th using either next business day or rush delivery, it'll still arrive in time. Even better? Wait until the 21st by choosing Saturday delivery.

If you've checked Instagram in the last couple of weeks, you're probably well aware of this season's obsession with all things hair clips and barrettes. From simple gold pieces like this one to pastel-colored and bedazzled barrettes, hair accessories are definitely the #ontrend gift to give this year. If you want your giftee's to arrive by December 24th, all you have to do is place your order by noon (ET) on December 21st and voila! it can be clipping her hair by Christmas morning.

Anyone who's felt the luxury of sleeping in silk pajamas knows that a pair like these baby blues is the ultimate gift. And since the days leading up to the holidays are waning, it helps that The Outnet is offering guaranteed arrival by the 24th if ordered by the 19th with expedited shipping, the 20th with next day shipping and the 23rd with premier shipping in NYC.

Everyone has that one person in their lives who's constantly skipping plans to work out, wakes up at the crack of dawn for Pilates and shows up everywhere decked out in activewear. This year, give them a gift they'll really appreciate, a $50 or $100 gift card to Class Pass. And you can order a digital copy anytime (that's right, even on Christmas Eve) and it'll be emailed to your recipient immediately.

Class Pass Gift Card, $50, available at Class PassPhoto Courtesy of Class Pass.

For your roomie who's woken you up at 3 a.m. the past two weekends begging you to let her in after losing his keys again. This key chain's not only handy and easy to find in even the biggest of tote bags, it's also pretty damn cute. And thanks to the fact that East Dane offers the same unbeatable shipping options as Amazon Prime, you won't have to spend even one more weekend climbing out of bed to let him in.

A Look Back At The 12 Buzziest Celebrity Beauty Moments Of 2018

$

The past 300-something days have felt not unlike a constant wrestling match where nobody ever wins. Between the unprecedented political climate (at times both disheartening and triumphant) we continue to soldier on through and all the pop-culture drama we've been keeping up with (Cardi, Offset, Khloe, Tristan — everyone — we're looking at y'all), we've been getting tackled left and right with events to reflect on as 2018 comes to a close.

But a comprehensive look at the year's highlight reel wouldn't be complete without reminiscing on the beauty moments that kept group chats everywhere alive: the good, the dramatic, and the very, very blonde. From Meghan Markle's bridal makeup that Americans woke up at 4 a.m. to see, to Beyoncé andMichelle Obama flaunting their natural hair, and lots of haircuts, there were plenty of celebrity looks that kept us — and our phones — buzzing. The most memorable of the year, ahead...

Ariana Grande Ditches Her Signature Ponytail For A Shoulder-Length Cut

Grande rarely experiments beyond her signature ponytail. When she does, it's usually for cascading waves or maybe a bone-straight style, if she's feeling adventurous — so we were definitely shook when the "Thank U, Next" singer posted a selfie with a shoulder-grazing haircut on Instagram.

Margot Robbie's Blunt Bob At The 2018 Oscars

Robbie solidified her status as our forever hair crush with the chin-length bob she wore to the Academy Awards. Her stylist, Bryce Scarlett, calls chopping the actress' hair the highlight of his year — and we can totally see why.

Nicki Minaj Takes Her Dramatic Weave To New Lengths

Crazy wigs and Nicki Minaj go together like PB&J, but the rapper took things to a new level of drama by making an ankle-length weave her "thing" in 2018. She rocked floor-grazing pink braids in her "Motorsport" video, for her Elle spread, in this trippy Instagram time lapse, and more. We can't say we'll be asking our stylist for hair down to our knees any time soon, but we were definitely tripping over Minaj's long-AF hair.

Danielle Brooks Makes A Case For Cutting. That. Shit. Off.

Following the news that Netflix would be canceling Orange Is The New Black after seven seasons, lead actress Danielle Brooks debuted a freshly-tapered big chop on Instagram, proving that a haircut and major career change go hand-in-hand.

Lana Condor Also Switches From Her Signature Pony To A Chin-Length Bob

Newfound fame also brought on a new look for the To All The Boys I've Loved Before star, who also got on the big-chop bandwagon this year. Condor traded her usual long ponytail for a cropped bob, which sent Lara Jean fans into a frenzy.

Priyanka Chopra Marries Nick Jonas In Bright-Red Lipstick

Priyanka Chopra's wedding to Nick Jonas was anything but predictable — and so was her makeup. The Quantico star said "I do" in Boy Gorgeous, a vibrant red lip color from Marc Jacobs Beauty and the total opposite of her bestie Meghan Markle's understated wedding look.

Beyoncé Rocks Her Natural Hair On Stage

For the European leg of her On The Run II tour, Beyoncé wore her naturally curly hair on stage. And she didn't stop there: Bey also showed off her natural hair (and bare face) for her iconic September Vogue cover.

Khloé Kardashian Goes Pastel Pink

The five female members of the Kardashian-Jenner family are no strangers to switching up their hair color, but Khloé has been more subtle in that department — until she showed up on the 'gram with baby-pink hair. The reality star went platinum blonde before playing around with blush-colored strands, and we're excited to see what shades she shows up with in 2019.

The Year Of The Couples' Tattoo

Gone are the days of making things official (or unofficial) with a Facebook status change or an Instagram selfie: This year, celebrity couples made things permanent with matching tattoos. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner got coordinating Disney-inspired words, Justin Bieber reportedly got inked in honor of new bride Hailey Baldwin, and Halsey got a zodiac tat which, fans say, is a dig at her on-again-off-again beau, G-Eazy.

Michelle Obama Wears Her Natural Hair For Essence Magazine

Michelle Obama has graced the covers of many prestige magazines, but her January Essence feature was extra special because it was the first time the former FLOTUS wore her natural curls on a cover.

Meghan Markle's No-Makeup Bridal Makeup

When it comes to bridal makeup, the Duchess of Sussex proved less is more. For her royal nuptials, Markle walked down the aisle in refreshing, barely-there makeup by Daniel Martin that we still swoon over from time to time.

Melania Trump Goes Blonde For Two Seconds

While visiting military bases for a Fox News segment, Trump debuted noticeably blonder hair, a departure from her usual chocolate brown with highlights. The internet, erm, had some thoughts, but her new look didn't last long: Three days after we spotted her fresh hair, the FLOTUS was back to brown.

Celine proves that fashion can woo, it can evolve, and it can piss a lot of people off.

Last January, after it was announced that beloved British designer Phoebe Philo would exit her fixed position at the French label's helm, the industry speculated who would take over. At the time, there were a few designers without work, but none of them were rumored to be up for the job. Instead, the names of lesser-known, already-employed creatives were on the table: Natasa Cagalj (then of Stella McCartney, now of Port 1961), Celine's own ready-to-wear design director Michael Rider, Ilaria Icardi of Victoria Beckham, and more. But in the end, the very well-known Hedi Slimane, the previous Dior Homme and Yves Saint Laurent creative director, took the top spot.

The French designer and photographer known for his piquant aesthetic was an unlikely choice to lead a by-women-for-women brand that celebrated understated luxury. Slimane's appointment felt like a step backward, and his debut didn't strike gently. The collection was a rehashing of what he mastered at another label — skin-tight going-out dresses, a helping of leather and sequins, an almost exclusive black color palette — and it took nearly a month for the first look to appear on the red carpet.

But since then, celebrities have warmed up to the new Celine in ways the fashion industry (still) hasn't. From Lady Gaga to Amandla Stenberg to Dakota Johnson to Natalie Portman and more, the Hollywood crowd and their stylists seem to be into it. (Old Celine was seldom a go-to for stars at step-and-repeats.) It's an interesting move for red carpet dressing. After all, these very stars were the ones who, earlier this year, joined the #MeToo movement to send strong statements of female empowerment and gender equality with their words, actions, and clothes — not exactly in line with Slimane's "sexy" aesthetic.

Ahead, we're keeping tabs on which stars are taking the new Celine for a test drive. Sure, some people could chalk these moments up to nothing more than sequin dresses and stylists who need to make good on their Slimane connection. Or Slimane's obsession with Hollywood (the Parisian native is based in LA, after all). Or even simpler: famous people just love new stuff.
