It’s finally 2013, and if you’re like us and think it’s going to be the best year yet, this roundup of events will make sure your prophecy is one step closer to coming true. To jump-start the next 364 days (including this one!), we’ve found the most spectacular itinerary of weekly bashes. From a standout exhibition to a festival full of golden brews, it’s safe to say this lineup is one for the record books, kiddos. Peruse the events below and get an idea as to why 2013 already rocks!
Exploratorium’s Last Day
The new year is already bringing in some momentous changes for San Francisco, and one of them is Exploratorium’s big move. Today marks the last time you can visit its eye-opening exhibits or celestial spectacles at the Palace of Fine Arts before it transplants to Pier 15 in April. To make things bittersweet, Exploratorium is opening its doors for free today only! Now that’s the kind of price that gets us in the exploring mood!
When: Wednesday, January 2, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Exploratorium, 3601 Lyon Street (near Baker Street); 415-528-4377.
Zappos Labs Lunch 2.0
Want to rub elbows with the big leagues in sartorial marketing? Shopping e-commerce giant Zappos is hosting a not-to-be-missed lunch and wants to meet all you HTML and online shopping enthusiasts for a chow down. We love us some tech events that happen in, you know, actual real life — particularly when grub is involved! The space is limited at this free soirée, so be sure to register here, stat!
When: Friday, January 4, noon to 2 p.m.
Where: Zappos Labs, 121 2nd Street, 3rd Floor (at Mission Street); No phone.
Books Revisited Exhibition
Turns out, tomes have artistic limits that go way beyond literary words and phrases. In Rare Device’s latest exhibit, famed artist Karen Kang uses the pages torn from vintage ’50s books to create an entire collection of mixed-media wonders. The pieces stand to juxtapose modern life with yesteryear and to leave viewers visually captivated. It goes without saying that this exhibit is a novel idea we’re eager to see.
When: Friday, January 4, 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Rare Device, 600 Divisadero Street (at Hayes Street); 415-863-3969.
Seed Propagation Workshop
Truth be told, being green really isn’t as easy as it seems. To help us channel our inner wilderness child, gardening expert Ryan Batjiaka is teaching a one-time seed propagation course to reveal his herb-growing techniques. Attendees will get the scoop on the right kind of planting soil, seed selection tips, and transplanting so we can start seeing some real results in time for spring!
When: Saturday, January 5, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Where: Common Ground Garden Supply and Education Center, 559 College Avenue (at Yale Street), Palo Alto; 650-293-6072.
Cost: $31; Buy tickets here!
Bay Area Brew Festival
If you favor microbrews over frilly cocktails, there’s an entire festival dedicated to all you guzzlers out there. The third annual Bay Area Brew Festival is back at it again this weekend and will be loaded with chug-worthy national beers and mouth-watering food trucks galore. Last year this swigging shindig sold out, so grab your tickets and mug and start knocking back those brewskies.
