Don't Sweat It: These 4 Smart Snaps Should Inspire Your Summer Style

$

It's easy to default to beachwear and (much) less-is-more outfits during the hottest months of the year. But, just because the mercury's hitting the fan, that doesn't mean your personal style POV has to suffer.

This season calls for mega-bright colors, airy dresses, and, of course, a sweet set of shades that can keep you cool while you look (and, okay, possibly feel) hot.

To gather some inspiration for the heat-advisory days ahead, we took to the streets of New York and Toronto to snap locals who have summer style down pat. Go ahead and recreate them all for yourself. In this case, it's totally okay to be a copycat.

main After a jam-packed day of fireworks, BBQs, and Fourth of July shenanigans — we need to recharge our batteries. Luckily, two of our fave fashion facilities, Acrimony and ACRE/SF, are helping us achieve low-cost retail recovery that we won’t even need to leave our abode to experience. Scope the sale section of the shops' website for covetable end-of-season selections. We're talking apparel, shoes, and accessories that are already on sale, and are now marked down even more. Just use code SAVE25 at checkout to nab 25% off these previously discounted threads.

This way you can slip into Laugh Cry Repeat’s silky shirts, Jeffery Campbell's playful platforms or Pretty Penny Stock's lovely looks for cents on the dollar. The whole sale within a sale has got a bit of an Inception vibe, but that totally makes sense since the stores' duds are so dreamy. So, log in and load up, because after July 6 these bargains will be a faint memory.

Hot Damn: Namibia's Coolest Desert Boots Finally Arrive Stateside

vellies-2

Not a news flash: Good-looking shoes are awesome. But it's definitely a plus when they're also comfortable, durable, and whimsical, to boot. And for the Namibian shoe company Herbert Schier, it's check, check, and...check! This recent U.S.-import line has been gaining great traction for its hand-crafted Velskoen boots — usually referred to as "vellies" — and now their famous desert boots are more accessible than ever.

The 74-year-old African brand seems to be making some big changes before it hits its three-quarters-of-a-century mark. Herbert Schier has recently shot its very first lookbook, and, much to our delight, expanded to the States with a newly launched collection of exclusive "vellies" sold at Opening Ceremony.

This heritage brand may be inspired by the traditional footwear of the local Khoikhoi tribe, but trust — the designs are anything but dated. (Just feast your eyes on the neon toe caps and leopard-print leather.) If our own praise for these modern-classic kicks isn't enough to convince, the incredibly happy models of Swakopmund, Namibia may be the ultimate endorsement for these local fashion treasures making international waves.

This CT Art Installation Is Disneyland On Crack & Worth The Drive

$

Nestled in the sleepy-but-pleasant suburbia of Greenwich, Connecticut, the Brant Art Foundation is an art junkie's Disneyland. The spread is complete with pristine lawns and perfect polo fields— and characters, too, if you count Jeff Koons’ "Puppy." As the latest artist to show at the foundation space, Karen Kilimnik has put her own spin on the utopic surroundings with girlish signature style and theatrical installations. Let’s just say, if Alice In Wonderland was on the Oriental Express in the ‘60s, the story would look a lot like this: outsized estate interiors, traditional Chinese lanterns, and KK’s ’89 shrine to pop culture, The Hellfire Club Episode of The Avengers.

Like a whimsical dream-book, Kilimnik’s pieces conjure up juvenile hallucinations in the CT backdrop, with blue skies and pretty faces, fluffy clouds, and princess ponies. She might look like she’s just learned to dot her i’s and cross her t’s, but her hand-written messages are more than just childish chatter, focusing instead on complex concepts like female psychology and historical overtures. That’s her thing; perfecting the art of the Crayola crayon whilst taking her lead from 18th century French portraitists.

Foreshadowing Garance Dore by sketching the streets scenes of la mode à Paris and highlighting pop-culture idolism with her Leonardo DiCaprio portrait, circa 1985, her teen-dream aesthetica doesn’t stop there. Pretty fashion pictures, Madonna soundtracks, and naïvely titled works such as “The Chic French View Of The Silkworm Invasion Of North America” contrast with her heavy references to Napoleon and World War II.

And, from country idyll to an Oriental nirvana, Paul Montgomery (AKA wallpaper whizz-kid) transformed the space for Kilimnik, with custom-made wall coverings featuring elements from her work, alongside flora and flauna to style it Cinderella chinoiserie chic. Meanwhile, the upstairs resembled the aftermath of a Prince Harry party — "Fountain of Youth" yields manicured hedges and noble water fountains, along with wilting roses watered with Dom Pérignon and littered with the contents of royal Bulgari goodie bags. On view until September, don’t let yourself go to or leave Greenwich without hitting this Disney for grownups. But don't take our word for it, either — click through for some quick views of the exhibit and you might just have a whole new set of weekend plans.

This Is Our Jam: Kanye West Featuring Pusha T, "New God Flow"

When Kanye West performed an excerpt of “New God Flow” at the BET Awards, he proved once again that he's one of the rare performers who can absolutely own a television audience. Stepping into the crowd, Kanye West rapped an a capella version of track, stomping his feet as if to will the audience into action.

As it turns out, the recorded version of the “New God Flow” manages a similarly intense effect, letting Pusha T and Kanye West maintain all the anger and vulnerability they showed at that show. When Pusha T lauds Kanye more unhinged behavior (“I think it’s good that 'Ye got a blow dealer / A hot temper, matched with a cold killer”), well, it’s certainly the first time anyone’s called Kanye West a “killer” and made it sound believable. And Kanye more than pulls his weight as well, as he melts his own persecution complex into a heartfelt narrative of a kid growing up poor. There are competing themes, and it may not all hang together perfectly, but that’s how Kanye West is at his best: a contradiction you can’t ignore.

Street Style: The Mullet Skirt Done Perfectly

Bria-Scott_LuisTorres

We love a long, easy skirt any time of year, but we really love a mullet skirt for summer. The mini in the front, maxi in the back silhouette ups the anti of any basic outfit and keeps you cool and chic all at once. (Have you been outside yet?) Just check the look we peeped on Bria Scott. She amplifies her skirt's unique versatility by working off its dressy-but-not-so-dressy flair with knock-around booties and simple hair and makeup. But, don't think this ensemble is quite so basic: She's topping the skirt off with a solid gray tank, but the cut of the shirt makes her get-up more punched-up than usual (and we're feeling the flattering cuts of the two together). Plus, the sleek silver necklace and subtle belt finish it all off to perfection. Only question is, where can we buy it all?

When You Wish Upon A Star...Louboutin Gives You Cinderella Slippers

louboutin-scoop

When you think of the shoe that breaks hearts, makes kingdoms, and sends gaggles of girls into a frenzy, there is but only one heel (and it isn't the Miu Miu glitter pump). Cinderella's slipper not only saved her from the tyranny of her step-mom, but it won her a prince — and proved that patience and kindness trumps selfishness and vanity, every time. So to mark the re-release of the classic Disney film this fall, the man behind the real-world pumps that make girls go gaga has envisioned a modern Cinderella slipper, debuting this Couture Week. We had heard rumblings of the fairy-tale collaboration, but the shoe has now magically appeared.

Christian Louboutin's take on the legendary slipper is a crystal-covered confection, embellished with lace and adorned with two butterflies. The collaboration is total couture (i.e. not available for us who don't have fairy godmothers), but Louboutin promises to give away a couple of pairs. While they come with a trademarked red heel, we have to be frank about our one disappointment: These pretties, sadly, aren't made of glass.

Snooki Had Her Baby... Oh Wait, No, That's Coors Light

snooki_baby_carriage Sometimes, as editors and pop cultural fanatics, we find a story that simply writes itself. We could wistfully pen the degradation of television, the bizarre depictions of pregnancy, or a celebrity-hungry paparazzi obsessed with the downward spiral of stars.

Or we can simply say: "Here is a picture of a pregnant Snooki pushing a baby carriage filled with beer and soda while she is filming The Jersey Shore." Because, quite frankly, we don't have much to add, and as we all know, a picture = 1,000 words. If we had to put a PS, we think this works: "First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby Coors Light in the baby carriage...." (The Superficial)

Who She Is: Ahara
Where We Spotted Her: At the Wicker Park Green Fest
Why We Love Her: While biking through Chicago's streets can be a bit, well, nervewracking, putting together the perfect two-wheelin' ensemble is a fashion girl's dream challenge. Our gorgeous subject here rose to the task effortlessly — her outfit is the perfect blend of summery pastels, and is practical enough to actually, you know, get around town. Trade in your sky-high heels for a pair of vintage loafers, plus a skirt that's long enough to cover that banana seat. Add in some precious pastels for a French-chic look, and you may as well be pedaling along the Seine with a baguette in your basket.

If there's ever a time to combine cultural enlightenment with air conditioning, it's now. And there's no better place to head than the cool, refreshing mecca that is the Corcoran Gallery of Art. We've been eagerly anticipiating the exhibition featuring painter Richard Diebenkorn, and we're thinking his palette of soothing pastels and ocean-esque hues will be just the thing to soothe our summer woes.

The exhibit serves as the perfect backdrop for a chill outing with your honey or your BFF, and if you go on Saturday, you'll get free admission. And if you haven’t got a clue what to wear, we can help with that, too. We've come up with an ensemble that's equal parts abstract and modern, with a palette that serves as a super-chic nod to the artist, to boot.

From left: Kimchi Blue Double-Zip Envelope Cross-Body Bag, $42, available at Urban Outfitters; KG Mavis Beaded Flat Sandals, $107.71, available at ASOS; Topshop Silk Ombre Maxi Dress, $120, available at Topshop; J.Crew Blooming Enamel and Brass Necklace, $50, available at J.Crew; Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Lament, $14, available at Sephora.

R29 Love Letter: July Hotness From Us To YOU

LetterToTheEditor

Historically, July is a sleepy month. The temps are high, energies are low (in a good way), and everyone's inner sonar is directed toward sunset cocktails and, if you're lucky, some summer flinging. And even though you, our lovely readers, are preoccupied with catching trains, planes, and automobiles to high-tail it out of town (after all, we're all just "crazy busy!" and the Times is apparently calling us out on it), we've got plenty of stellar ideas in the pipeline to keep you cool and satiated, right here, in our first monthly letter from the editor.

But before we get started, let's address the fact that Goddamn Mercury is going retrograde on July 18. What does that mean for you? In a nutshell: old boyfriends creeping back into the picture, laptops and iPhones having tantrums, miscommunications between you and your co-workers, and weird travel snafus. If you're anything like us, you'll use the three "reverse" weeks to tie up loose ends and finish up old projects as well as clean out your closets and get ready for a new season on the horizon…you know, it'll be here before we know it.

However, in the here and now, the Summer Olympics in London start at the end of the month, and we're ramping up with our favorite athletes past and present, the events we've got our eye on, some athlete-inspired workouts, AND, perhaps most importantly, giving some love to the city Refinery29 will be launching in come November (yes! R29 is going global!).

Style Syllabus: Easy Storage Buys For Last Semester's Miscellany

As writers, we understand if you're not exactly in favor of burning all your old papers, printouts, and painstaking notes at the end of every semester. Yet each time you return home from college, the desk in your old room gets increasingly buried under an unruly pile of unorganized junk. Now that you've got some time on your hands (unless you're way too busy with an internship or job, in which case, congrats!), why not use some of that ol' work ethic to reorganize?

Since you've dedicated hundreds of hours into all that genius work, let's not put those papers to waste. They deserve better than a trash can, and you never know when you'll need them again. Instead, these cheap-and-chic home buys will make it easy to whip your closet, desk, or under-the-bed crawl space into serious shape. However, we warn you: Expect more than a few pangs of nostalgia, whether in the form of a wonderfully naive freshman-year paper or in the kind comments from a beloved professor.

Go forth, organize, and enjoy the summer sans nagging from your parents about the growing mess in your room. restoration-hardware

metier 1Wow. We did not expect this one. Get ready to put on a major sad face, folks. Iconic Union Square shop Metier is closing up shop in three weeks. Just a few minutes ago, the boutique sent out an email blast telling its fans about the bummer news.

"After 21 years of fashion and fun, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to close Metier," owner Sheri Evans (one of S.F.'s coolest moms) writes. "Thank you for an amazing ride and the love and loyalty so many of you have shown us throughout the years. We have learned about your lives and heard so often how what we do makes your day richer and your walk more confident."

The shop will "keep a small online presence for jewelry" and Evans might launch a new project in 2013. Until then, folks can swoop in and pick up all the goods in the shop (some baubles included) for 50-80% off today, Thursday, July 5th, until the store's last day on Saturday, July 21st. We suggest heading over there stat to send Metier (and yourself) off in true style.
